Dr. Njeri Gitau is an award-winning Public Health Specialist and influential leader specializing in delivering high-priority initiatives that expand quality healthcare access throughout Africa and emerging markets. A trusted strategist and changemaker, Dr. Njeri advises government and corporate decision makers in enabling public-private dialogue and revamping policies or legislation to drive transformative impact. Throughout her career, Dr. Njeri has been pivotal in strengthening health systems that have had lifechanging effects on millions.
Dr. Njeri currently serves as Senior Director at the President’s Delivery Unit (PDU) for the Executive Office of the President (Government of Kenya). Notably, she was integral in implementing Universal Health Coverage across the country, oversaw NHIF reforms, and helped establish the Kenya National Public Health Institute.
Dr. Njeri’s commitment to improving organizational and government health systems extends to board, advisory, and consulting roles, including serving as the Resilient & Sustainable Systems for Health Focal Point/Expert and Technical Review Panel Member for Global Fund, Adjunct Faculty Member at Strathmore University Business School, Non-Executive Board Director at the Center for International Health Education & Biosecurity (CiHEB), and Board Advisor for Open Phences. As the former Board Chair of Nairobi Waldorf School Trust, her efforts dramatically grew revenues, increased enrollment, and optimized education quality.
As Senior Health Specialist of the International Finance Corporation for World Bank Group, Dr. Njeri led the enactment of the Kenya Health Act 2017 and redesigned the Kenyan government’s free maternity services programme (Linda Mama). During her tenure with AMREF Health Africa, Dr. Njeri led a USD$30M project (Maanisha) and established capacity for 1,000+ community- based civil society organizations to make positive change in the areas of HIV/AIDS, finance, and behavior change communications. Earlier in her career, Dr. Njeri worked for Kenya’s Ministry of Health and the Kayole & Karen Health Centers.
Dr. Njeri earned a Master of Science in Public Health and Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health (Health Services Management) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (University of London), and she holds Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees from the Makerere University School of Medicine.
