Program description

Center for International health, Education and Biosecurity-Kenya, with funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH), are conducting a five-year Co-occurring Alcohol and smoking cessation clinical trial Among People Living with HIV in Nairobi, Kenya. The study is examining how combinations of pharmacological and behavioral interventions may improve the chances of maintaining long-term alcohol and smoking abstinence and will provide needed efficacy data regarding best treatment approaches for sustained abstinence. Applications are invited from appropriately qualified candidates for the position of Research Assistant.

Job Summary

The primary function for this position is to recruit, sereen,enroll and follow up participants in compliance with the study protocol

Roles and responsibilities

  • Screen and recruit potential study participants
  • Perform consenting procedures for potential study participants
  • Conduct interviews for study participants using the study data collection tools as per Standard Operating Procedures
  • Conduct any clinical assessments counselling sessions as required by the study protocol
  • Ensure study data collection tools are completed with utmost accuracy
  • Track all participants enrolled in the study and conduct phone and community tracing for those who miss appointments as appropriate
  • Perform data entry on various study databases
  • Submit weekly summaries of enrollment and follow-up

Required Minimum Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in any of the following disciplines: – Biomedical Sciences, Applied Sciences, Public Health, Demography, Epidemiology or any relevant Social Science, or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution.
  • Having counselling skills is an added advantage
  • At least two (2) years’ relevant work experience  as research assistant
  • Certificate in Protection of Human Research Subjects and Good Clinical Practice
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English and Kiswahili
  • Proficiency in computer application  and competent in data entry skills; proficiency in data collection using REDCap is an added advantage
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
