Innovation Spotlight - CQI in action

From data to action, CIHEB-Kenya’s CQI model is transforming programming and saving lives.

In today’s rapidly evolving health landscape, innovation remains at the heart of improving delivery service. CIHEB-Kenya, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH), NASCOP, CDC, and other implementing partners, has taken a bold step toward transforming how quality healthcare is delivered across Kenya through the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Digital Platform.

The CQI platform was developed to simplify and strengthen how healthcare providers monitor, evaluate, and improve the quality of services offered in facilities. By aligning with national health priorities and Kenya’s Quality Improvement (QI) guidelines, the platform provides a structured, data-driven approach to ensuring that healthcare delivery is effective, safe and responsive to community needs.

So far, more than 5,000 healthcare providers have been trained and mentored in using the system, which currently tracks over 5,000 CQI projects across 35 counties. These numbers represent more than data points - they signify a growing community of health workers committed to continuous improvement and better patient outcomes.

At the core of the platform lies the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) model, a globally recognized framework for quality improvement that helps healthcare teams identify gaps, test interventions, and scale up what works. The platform enables users to monitor CQI projects, share best practices and access mentorship and learning resources. It also allows QI supervisors to provide real-time technical support, ensuring that lessons learned at one facility can be replicated and scaled up in others.

Beyond individual facilities, the platform serves multiple levels of the healthcare system—from facility CQI teams and sub-county managers to county and national QI leadership. It also supports implementing partners and agency advisors, offering a shared space for collaboration, learning, and accountability.

One of the platform’s key strengths is its ability to provide real-time data visualization and project management through its facility module, which includes dashboards, ongoing and archived projects, progress tracking, test cycles, comments and feedback features. These functions make it easier for teams to assess progress, refine interventions and sustain improvements over time.

The CQI Digital Platform is not just a tool-it represents a shift in mindset. It promotes a culture of quality that values learning, collaboration and accountability. With continuous use and engagement, this innovation is driving Kenya closer to achieving its national healthcare quality goals - delivering care that is effective, equitable, timely and safe for all.

As CIHEB-Kenya and its partners continue to support the Ministry of Health in strengthening health systems, the CQI platform stands as a testament to what can be achieved when technology and commitment to quality work hand in hand for the benefit of every Kenyan.
